Interior lighting, planned and installed

Every job starts with the same four-layer plan. These are the things we then build from it.

  • Recessed and cove lighting

Downlights, indirect cove and light thrown up into vigas or beam bays. We mark each housing against the joists, beams and ductwork before anything is cut.

    • Housings chosen for the ceiling depth

    • Cove drivers left where they can be reached

    • Aimed and dimmed after dark

  • Pendants, chandeliers and sconces

Fixtures hung to the heights on the plan, on boxes that can carry them, centered on the table or the wall instead of the nearest stud.

    • Box and blocking set before the wall closes

    • Heights written on the plan sketch

    • Supplied or ordered fixtures

  • Under-cabinet and picture lighting

Strips under cabinets, lights over the range, and a small light on a painting or a nicho. Each one is wired to a switch that makes sense in the room.

    • Drivers placed out of sight

    • Warm or neutral white, matched in a room

    • Switched separately from the ceiling

  • Dimming and keypads

Dimmers matched to each load, and keypads that set a scene in one press. Every circuit is named on the plan, so the plate by the door reads in plain words.

    • Dimmers chosen for the fixture type

    • Scenes set with you at dusk

    • A circuit list left with the owner

  • Ceiling fans with light

A fan and its light on separate switching, hung from a box made for the weight. The light dims on the same layer plan as the rest of the room.

    • Fan-rated box

    • Light and fan controlled on their own

    • Balanced and checked before we leave

  • Fixture swaps in older homes

Replacing fixtures in adobe, plaster and older frame houses. We trace the wiring we find, check the boxes and tell you what the work needs before we start.

    • Surface runs and chases shown on the plan

    • Old boxes checked before reuse

    • Permit handled where the work needs one

Dimming and keypads

Switch plates that read in plain words

A plan with four layers in a room means four things to control. We name each circuit on the sketch, choose the dimmer for the fixture, and set the scenes with you after dark. You leave with the circuit list, so a house sitter or a new owner can use the room.

  • Dimmers matched to LED, halogen or incandescent loads

  • Keypads where one press sets a scene

  • Circuit list left in the house

Questions about the work

Will you have to open my walls?

Sometimes. New cove or recessed lights in a finished ceiling need access, and adobe walls take surface runs or chases. The plan shows where, so a plasterer or painter can be booked before we start.

Can you work from my designer's drawings?

Yes. Send the reflected ceiling plan or the electrical sheet and we mark it up with box locations, dimmer groups and anything the structure won't allow. The designers page lists what we send back.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

Paint from before 1978 may contain lead. Tell us when the house was built. Where the work will disturb old paint, the estimate says how that will be handled and what it adds.

Tell us which rooms

A walk-through is how we start. We look at the ceilings, the walls and the panel, then draw the plan.
